from Felix Richter, July 24th, 2014 While Facebook's overall user growth has naturally slowed down a bit - monthly active users grew 3% on a quarter-to-quarter basis and 14% year-over-year - the number of users who access Facebook via mobile devices is still growing rapidly. Of Facebook's 1.07 billion mobile users, 399 million access Facebook exclusively on mobile devices, representing an increase of more than 80% over last year's second quarter and of almost 20% compared to the March quarter of this year. Thankfully, Facebook has successfully figured out how to monetize its mobile users, because one thing is now more clear than ever: Facebook's future is mobile. This charts shows Facebook's monthly active users, broken down by the type of device they access the social network on.

A recent report published by eMarketer finds that time spent on digital media use among US adults surpassed time spent with TV for the first time in the last year. This trend is driven by the increasing proliferation of mobile devices in the United States. In 2014, time spent on smartphones and tablets in the US will jump to 23.2 percent. Startlingly, mobile has become so popular, that classical online media usage is shrinking since 2012. According to EMarketer, "The bite mobile is taking out of desktop internet use keeps getting bigger. The Media Behavior Institute monitored US study participants and found that the mobile phone and tablet were drawing down the percentage of internet users who turn to the computer in a given week: The percentage on desktop slipped by 5 points between the six-month period ending in July 2012 and the six-month period ending in January 2013." In a recent article on the e Marketer website, Social Media and Mobile are definite trending platforms for larger marketing budgets. With the rapid growth of mobile devices, the need to "mobilize a website" is more important than ever. However, only 1.25% of all the websites currently out there are mobile friendly, according to a recent article by BIA Kelsey. I'm sure there are lots of times when you find a great site on your mobile device only to go through the 'squeeze and spread' of the site on your tiny mobile screen. In the past, there were ways to try and duplicate you main site in mobile-friendly pages and redirect your site to those pages with a script embedded in the header section of your home page. There were many problems faced by early pioneers in the mobile internet experience. The most common problem was compatibility. Early "smarphones" had their own unique OS and did not convert full-size web pages well. When you did find mobile compatible web pages, great! But not many people took the time to have both full size mobile pages for their web sites Adroid and IPhone operating systems changed the game by allowing users to squeeze and spread their way on various web pages. This is still a slow and tedious process. New technology and ideas have been developed that now make it very easy and affordable to convert existing websites, without changing anything on the site, into mobile pages optimized for the smartphone platform. |
